Painting artists Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet lived in the Ubud area and introduced Western aesthetics of light and shadow, depth, and anatomy. Anak Agung Gede Sobrat and Dewa Putu Bedil adapted these ideas for scenes of Bali daily life, Balinese dances, and Hindu ceremonies. *Batuan Style Painting: Works with less influence from Western aesthetics developed in Batuan village, where resident foreigners during the 1930s were not artists. Paintings by Ida Bagus Togog and Ida Bagus Wija are dense with stylized figures, distorted perspective, or multiple views. I Made Budi and I Wayan Bendi paint caricatures of visitors in typical tourist activities. *Contemporary Bali Painting: Other Balinese works include humorous ink paintings by Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai and supernatural themes by I Ketut Budiana. More modern painting styles from cubism to abstract expressionism are done by I Nyoman Tusan, and other academically trained Bali artists. Until the star of this century, the dominant form of Balinese painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by Balinese painters and ilustrators called Sangging. Aside from large representational paintings, the Sangging were also expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and particular, to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn't until the early 1900s that Western influence reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, amongst others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian influenced art and European painters who began to move to Bali Indonesia. Ubud village's fame for art can be traced to the arrival of German painter Walter Spies (1895-1942) and Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978). There now exists a wide range of different style of Bali painting, some of which are: Ubud Style Painting, Batuan Style Painting, Contemporary Balines Painting and Others.
