Painter
Anak Agung Gede Sobrat (1911-1992), address: Padang Tegal, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali,
Indonesia. First learned how to make Wayang Kulit (leather pupets) from his
grandfather. Sobrat was one of the few Balinese who actually studied directly
under Walter Spies (German, 1895-1942), from whom he learned about the principle
of perspective and the use of light and shadow to create depth. His works of
dancers, market scenes, and village life include large figures which he learned
later on from Rudolf Bonnet (Dutch, 1895-1978). From 1957-1959, Sobrat also
taught art at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine
Arts) in Yogyakarta, Central Java.
